Barrow Creek Hotel

Barrow Creek is located on the Stuart highway 280kms north of Alice Springs and 220kms south of Tennant Creek. It is a wayside inn and as such serves fuel, food, accommodation and refreshments.

The hotel is virtually as old as the Sydney Harbour bridge with both icons being opened in 1932. It lies adjacent to the Barrow Creek Telegraph Station established in 1872 and is nestled aesthetically in amongst some flat table topped hills geologically called Mesas. It started being built by the Kilgariff family in 1926. The masonry blocks of the buildings are made from concrete and the local creek sand. Barrow Creek is surrounded by two cattle stations and depending of the time of the year visits to them may be arranged. Cattle were introduced to the area in the 1890's. The Barrow Creek locality was named by Australia's greatest inland explorer John McDouall Stuart in July of 1860.
